Customer Reviews of Diamond Quartz Chess Clock - Brown

Art Cominio from Orlando Diamond Quartz Chess Clock - Brown ReviewSomeone here panned the Diamond Quartz Chess clock because they didn't understand how to set it. DUH! You just set both sides the same by watching the flags drop! For the price it is a fine product. It has quartz accutacy even though it is has an analog display. Unlike more complicated digital clocks, anyone should be able to use the Diamond Quartz Chess Clock, and I hope Wholesale chess continues to sell it despite comments from non-chess-players who bought it as a gift and don't underatand what a dropping flag means.

Arthur from Mexico Diamond Quartz Chess Clock - Brown ReviewThis is a good basic clock and will run for months on a single battery without losing any accuracy. As far as setting it up, it couldn't be simpler: it's just like a wrist watch, except general practice is to set the time to expire at six - not twelve - o'clock (i.e., 5:40 if you want a rhythm of twenty minutes per player, 5:00 if you want an hour, etc. with the idea that the vision of two hands doesn't confuse the player). Like all analogue chess clocks, the flag starts to lift up at five minutes to the hour as the minute hand gets closer to the twelve. When it falls upon arriving at twelve, you or your opponent can claim a victory on time: "Your flag has fallen!". It's not designed for clock-thumping blitz play with very short time limits where every second counts, so any complaint about not being able to set both clocks EXACTLY the same just isn't valid. Likewise, it's not the manufacturer's obligation to explain the rules of chess relating to clocks (five-minute annotation rule, fallen flag proceedure, etc.). Criticism of the clock on this basis is completely unfounded. These are great clocks - a bit bulky, but certainly solid and dependable. I just wish they were five bucks cheaper per unit in bulk lots. The only reason the clock doesn't get a full five stars is purely cosmetic: most of the colors are a mismatch with their corresponding chessboards, and the boxes will look ratty after only two or three uses, limiting the resale value.

DJS from Harrison, NY Diamond Quartz Chess Clock - Brown ReviewI ordered this for my 9-year old grandson. I am returning it and have ordered a replacement -- the 0401 Saitek Blue Schoolastic -- based on a 'chat' recommendation with a rep at Wholesale Chess. Comments on the Diamond Quartz Clock: (1) It seems to be fragile. (2) The instructions that come with it are an amazingly poor, incomprehensible translation, of whatever was written in Chinese/Japanese/whatever. Whomever translated them clearly is not fluent in English. If anone ay WC had read them, they'd have had to decide to send along an intelligible set of instructions. (3) It's virtually impossible to set both clocks to EXACTLY the same time. (4) There's no audible sound when one player's time has expired. I gave it one star only because there's no way to give it 0 stars.
