Customer Reviews of Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King
Rick from Toledo Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewI bought this set with a combo, and I am delighted with it. Look and feel is very good, very solid and pleasing. I experienced none of the defects noted by others, but if I need to re-glue a felt base someday, I won't mind. These are a great value for the money, with wide stable bases. I will probably buy another set for my son. I bought the cheaper 3 3/4" king set and wish I had bought another of these.
Luis from Oceanside Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewI am glad I got this set. It is much better than the basic set and it is only slightly more expensive.
Richard from Belfair Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewI am very satisfied with the quality. The pieces look great, and the weight is substantial. The only problem is the few pieces that are wobbly. The lead weight protrudes from the base. That is easily corrected. The felt peels off, and sticks back on. I'll file the lead flat with the base.
Cleveland from San Francisco Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King Reviewnot heavy enough.
Russell from Fairfield, Il Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewVery disappointed in the quality. The lead weighting was not completely inserted in the cavity and made the pieces woobly. I will order from another source next time.
Alexei from Placerville CA Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewMostly agree with pros and cons reviewers already listed for this set; um, don't find the seems all that noticeable, though I do wish the set was made of better quality plastic and that it was weighted heavier. IMHO these pieces are actually more attractive then some much more expensive sets. For this reason I will probably eventually end up removing the felts it came with, glue all the weights securely in place and replace with a better/thicker quality felt. Cheers.
Davy from Sacramento, CA Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewBeautifully designed set, shame its so cheaply constructed. Didn't experience any weight caused piece lean on my set (as mentioned by other reviewers) but they are obviously loose in some of the piece's. I agree, as others have said, that this is not the best set for blitz (the "Ultimate Staunton" set is probably the best blitz set out there). The felt is quite thin, and I have had one come off one of the pawns already after moderate use. Overall, I am not unhappy with the pieces, it really is a handsomely designed chess set, and tough to beat for the price. However, for a few bucks more WSC Premier Chess Pieces are a much better value, they are heavier, better constructed, have a fine blitz feel, and are also aesthetically pleasing. I still use this set occasionally although I have other sets, but will probably end up giving it to a nephew who is getting into chess.
Dave from St. Louis, MO Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewExecutive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8 King. Nice black & ivory set in a low-glare matte finish.I thought at first that I would not like the set much because it would be "too tall" but the set looks good.It fits well in the different bags I've tried it in, even with the extra queens. The pieces have a nice weight and the bases are wide enough that they do not feel as if they will fall over. The knight and bishop have nice designs while the rook and pawns are beefy. The queen is a bit pointy but it is not as sharp as some I have seen. The pawn bases are about 1.25" so they look good on a 2.25" square. The cross on the king's crown looks a bit small and fragile but the lifetime warranty means I am not worried about it too much - I know firsthand that WSC honors the warranty quickly and with no questions asked.I have not played with a better set at this ($15) price range.Pros: Over 2 lbs weight, beefy pieces, extra queens, matte finish, WSC replacement warranty, pawns are well-proportioned Cons: Queen's crown could be more rounded (like the Heavy and Basic pieces), could be over 3 lbs...
Paul from Montreal Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewI bought 4 sets of chess pieces in plastic and there is my full report:
1. Heavy Tournament with 3 3/4" King very good value shinny plastic - Knight look - bulk king crown and - grey white. My note: 3.5/5
2. Executive with 4" King good value with combo set nice pieces - mate finish. some people prefer shinny plastic and wrote negative reviews. My note: 4/5
3. Premium with 4 1/8" King good value with combo set heavy and tall shinny plastic ivory White - King too big for Queen/Bishop/Knight/Rook size - crown Queen too sharp -my note: 5/5
4. Hastings Staunton with 3.875" King awesome Knight details as $1000 wood pieces set- Knight too small (less than Rook) - too small padmate finish and natural colour is brown yellow. My note: 5/5
Jay from Oxford Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewI agree with on of the other reviewers. This set is cheap. The seams from the molds show badly. The weights are jagged, roughly cut pieces of metal that do not properly fit in the base of the chess pieces. I don't like using the set because the bigger pieces, especially kings and queens, lean badly.
Gin from Koah Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewI absolutely love this set - the size, the weight, the feel of the pieces - it is all so special. The horses are magnificent. I just love it Thankyou!.
Joe from NJ Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewI would not buy these pieces again even thought I got them on sale 2 for $15. I also bought heavy weight pieces and I think they are way better quality and weigh is about the same.
John from Anderson, SC Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewI received my order very quick. Only problem was the set was one pawn short. I called and was treated like I purchased a $1,000.00 set. The pawn was in the mail that day and I received it about five days later. % stars for service, quality, and price. Thanks John
Arthur from Seattle Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewDisappointed, Molded plastic is cheap with large rough edges on the mold seams, the weights weren't all seated properly so some pieces don't sit flat, the "felt" is barely fuzzy paper that doesn't stick well. The bases are almost too wide for a vinyl board, but at leas they are pretty stable when playing speed chess. If you have any money to spare, go with the real House of Staunton pieces, the quality isn't even comparable.
Bob from St. Louis Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewGreat feel and weight. I truly enjoy playing this set.
Jason from Old Bridge Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King Reviewbeautiful tall slender great size & weight had to soften the edges on queen rook & knight for speed chess they are exactly what i wanted perfect price
Khaled from Kuwait Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewUnbiased review: The set is very heavy, sturdy, large and attractive. They are not easily knocked to their sides because of their added weights. However, the felts do come off (not easily as another reviewer stated) and on occasion, the weights inside the pieces come loose (sometimes fall out, however this is rare). They could be a problem if you like to play blitz and you're not used to heavy pieces. But even with that, I still recommend these pieces. Once you get used to them, all other (unweighted) pieces will feel weak and unworthy for playing with. In fact, I prefer to play with these during blitz (A few friends don't like the heavy feel. They say the pieces shouldn't be used for blitz). Also, It makes it more dramatic when you smash down a heavy piece on the table. Final Verdict and at this price, you'd be nuts to let this pass through your fingers.
Steve from Brooklyn, NY Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewThese pieces are mediocre. My biggest problem is that they are a little too large to be used with a standard vinyl board and too heavy to carry around. They have a more premium feel than some of the standard sets but they lack versatility - they are too heavy for blitz! Also, the felt falls off easily.
Myles from Oklahoma City Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewThe pieces are nicely weighted plastic for the money, also. However, if you have the money I'd recommend Super Staunton or Marshall sets. They have crisper sculpts and are heavier weighted. They're worth the few extra $$.
Vincent from Los Angeles Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewThe pieces are weighted and feel sturdy and the price was excellent.
Josh from Durhan Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewPieces have a nice feel, and are quality made.
Greg from Menasha, WI Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewThe aspect of these chess pieces that is most attractive is the different kind of plastic from which they are made. Many plastic club sets are made with a fairly "brittle" kind of plastic that makes a distinctive "clink" when pieces strike one another (captures, etc.). With these pieces, the plastic feels more solid and "softer," so that captures are quieter. The "Executive" pieces are well-weighted and the pieces designs are a distinctive Staunton design. This is an excellent set for the money if one is looking for a sturdy practice, club, or "carry with you" kind of chess set.
Alfred Palang from The Woodlands, Texas Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewI am satisfied with the chess set. It would be difficult to beat its price.
M.J. from Ashburn Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewI am sure you can find heavier pieces out there but for the price these pieces are great. I wish they came in other colors.
Matt from Parkersburg Executive Staunton Chess Pieces with 3 7/8" King ReviewI purchased these pieces as part of a combo a few months back. The design of this set is beautiful. Unfortunately, the quality of the craftsmanship is poor. When I received the pieces, the felt had detached from many of them. Also, the weighted cores do not fit properly into the pieces in all cases, preventing them sitting flat on their bases. This is not a bad set for the money, but their are better quality pieces available.
