Description of Soigne Series Wood Chess Pieces 4" King - Bud Rosewood
Soigne (swn-'yA) is French for elegantly maintained or designed. Sophistication can come in a variety of designs. However, the most well-known is the Staunton design, which is named after Howard Staunton (a 19th century English chess player), and designed by Nathaniel Cook, in 1849. This set is intended to withstand the rigors of practical play while maintaining the elegance and pattern of the traditional Staunton styling. The design, quality, workmanship and finish of each chess piece are Soigne.
The Soigne Series from our Premier Collection is Crafted from Bud Rosewood and Boxwood. Bud Rosewood is a striking, red-burgundy-colored, light-grained, exotic wood which is more expensive than ebony, but is much more resilient and less likely to develop hairline cracks so prevalent in weighed ebony chessmen. The King stands 4" tall with a 1 3/4" base. From the sinuous Bishop to the ponderous Rook, these pieces are sure to delight. These pieces fit well on a board with 2.125 - 2.5" squares.
