The set itself is heavy so I won't recommend it be used for blitz. The plastic outline that some reviewers complained about are not that obvious unless you take a closer look at each piece. The detail on the pieces (with exception for the top portion of the knights' ears) is impressive for a set in this price range.The mousepad board will easily fold out flat. However, don't expect to see the same sharpness in color that you would see in the vinyl boards. Rolling it for storage can be quite a challenge since the board is larger than the average size board. Nonetheless, its quality is worth mentioning.The bag doesn't look too sturdy enough to take any extensive abuse but has very spacious inner compartments. The middle compartment is large enough to fit a bulky DGT Easy Game Timer Plus (which I always have a tough time transporting because of its bulk) or any of the longer Chronos Digital Chess clocks.I'm very satisfied with this purchase - got the most bang for my buck on this one. I'll definitely recommend this set to my other chess-crazed friends who are looking for a quality set without breaking the bank. The pieces could have better detail finish, and molding lines appear on every piece.2. The board leaves something to be desired. The printing is very light, and there are smudges here and there. A vinyl board has better printing, in fact, but this board compensates for being sturdier and being more functional, as it doesn't get curled or deformed however you store it. The cloth surface could enjoy better detail finish, too, as some strings appear on the edges. The size and weight of the pieces are great and the large 22"x22" gives you plenty of room to keep from bumping other pieces when moving. The board is made just like a mouse pad and lays perfectly flat. The bag fits everything nicely and seems to be pretty durable, it's pretty much the same standard large bag that everyone sells. Two things I would note about the set, though they are very minor. One is that yes, the points on the queen are sharp as other people have mentioned. This is nothing that a few minutes with a nail file can't cure. And two, the board is like a mouse pad with a cloth top and I have seen old mouse pads get pretty dirty with use and they never come clean easliy. I thought I would try spaying it with Scotch Guard but that made the ink bleed, so don't try it. Luckily I tried a small spot first so it is hardly noticable.I did a lot of comparison shopping of plastic tournament sets before deciding on this set. I saw a few out there that I think are better sets, but they were nearly twice as much. The biggest difference with the higher priced sets are normally billiard cloth instead paper felt bottoms. Nice, but not worth another $30 if you want my opinion. Overall, I think that for the money this set can't be beat.

The board is nice and gives a great feel. You can really slam pieces down without too much worry (if you're into that). Awesome. Absolutely awesome. I like that someone wrote "beefy" about the board. That's a great word to describe it. I had some problems getting it to fit back in the bag originally, but I have a good technique now. Start out rolling really tight and it fits perfectly. The pieces are huge and beautiful. I get compliments every week at my club. As mentioned in other reviews, the queen top could be deadly. I just used a small file and dulled it up a bit. Doesn't take away from the beauty at all. Great value, great set, unbeatable bargain. Will purchase more in the future for gifts.

I'm pretty picky and I have found that the board does not wrinkle (stays flat), the pieces are heavy, stable (do not fall over easily if you bump 'em), readily recognizable, and have a good texture (easy to grab if you're playing speed chess!)... The bag has a sporty look with a convenient shoulder strap. While the shoulder strap is convenient, it does cross over the zipper so when you open the bag, you just need to remember to first move the strap under the bag. The bag holds the board, pieces, and a clock with a bit of room to spare. I'm happy with my purchase.
