Description of Zagreb Complete Chess Set with Pieces, Board & Box
In the 1950s and 1960s the Zagreb Chess Set was one of the most popular chess sets used at major international chess tournaments, most notably the World Championship Candidates Match that was held in Bied, Zagreb in 1959.Thus, you may often see this set called the Zagreb '59. (Zagreb is now the capital of Croatia.)
Now you can save money AND have—not only the pieces—but a beautiful, perfectly sized chess board and a striking chess box as well.
This set of Zagreb Pieces (item WSC531) comes with two queens of each color. The queens and bishops have a contrasting color ball on top and the king has a contrasting crown. The knight is a most interesting piece. Patterned after a Russian knight, he has his head down, a closed mouth, a dramatically carved head, and thin curved neck above his thick chest. As with all wood, sets many have variations in colors of grain within a set.
The 19.7" (500 mm) Walnut Wood Chessboard (item RF0150) is made of walnut and maple with a exotic molded decorative border. It has 1 ¾ inch squares. It is made by Rechapados Ferrer, the leading chess board manufacturer in the world. These boards are inlaid by highly skilled craftsmen using the finest veneers available. The boards are finished with a polyurethane semi-gloss finish to beautify and protect the wood, giving a smooth mat touch to the boards and protecting players from light reflection.
The Classic Walnut Lacquered Chess Box (item 1085) that comes with this set is a real eye catcher in any setting. It measures 10" x 7" x 4" and can store up to a 4" King set. Each box is lined with velvet and has a hook clasp to secure your pieces.
