This large Bubinga Coffer Chess Box is an elegant way to store your finest chess pieces. (Bubinga is a rich-colored wood, much, like dark Rosewood or Mahogany.)
This handsome box will hold most chess sets with a king as large as 4 1/4 to 4 1/2 inches with space for an extra queens. Inside the beautifully grained box is a removable green felt-lined divided tray and sections to protect 34 pieces. It has a brass lock and keys. Box Dimensions: 15" x 9 1/2" x 6 1/2"

The compartments are as follows:
- King 5" Tall, 1 7/8" wide at base, and 1 1 /4" wide at top.
- Queens are each 5" Tall, 1 7/8" wide at base, and 1 1/4" wide at top
- Pawns are each 2 3/8" Tall, 1 1/2" wide at base, and 1 1/2" at top.
- Minor piece compartments are as follows:
- 3 1/4" Tall, 1 3/4" wide at base and 1 1/2" at top
- 3 1/4" Tall, 1 5/8" wide at base and 1 5/8" at top
- 3 3/8" Tall, 1 3/8" wide at base and 1 1/4" at top

James from Charlottesville Large Bubinga Pattern Coffer Chess Box ReviewThis is the only box I could find online that looked like it was reasonable quality for less than a king's ransom. I'm happy with it. It seems solid, nice fit and finish. Not real pleased with the key latch, feels rough in movement and just seems flimsy. I may design a replacement myself. Box could use some handles on the sides, but they will be easy to install. Top tray and and lid both have exceptional " air cushion " level of fit tolerances. Definitely a box for the den or living room and not for the road. Pieces in lower level will fall out of their slots if you turn the box sideways ( there is quite a bit of clearance between the bottom of the upper tray and the lower slots.

The pieces fit well and it looks great on my dresser. My only issue is that the dark pieces don't show well against the green felt, but I don't know what would be a better color.

Patrick from Willingboro Large Bubinga Pattern Coffer Chess Box ReviewI have a quality set of chess pieces with a four inch King and wanted to store them in a protective coffer chess box. I purchased this coffer chess box and was amazed at its beauty. It has two layers and each has a compartment for each chess piece, lined with green felt. There is an extra space if your set has four Queens. I placed one set in the bottom layer and each piece fit perfectly. However, when I placed the pieces in the removable layer, two pieces did not fit very well. I put the Bishops in last and the fit was very snug in those compartments. This is the only short coming that I saw with this product. Anyone interested in this product should check the dimensions of each compartment and see if it will accommodate your chess pieces. For the price, it is a good deal.

However, if your chessmen are higher than 4" or higher, with large diameter, make sure do you want to buy it or not: they will not fit, especially your knights and rooks! Slots for knights and rooks are way too small. This is usually seen in most "made in china" products! QC is the bis problem!!!
