Book Description
When you think of chess, you probably think of the strategy game played throughout Europe and the Americas. There is another kind of chess played throughout the world by probably more people than any other strategy game. That game is Chinese Chess. The "Elephant Game" as it is called by the Chinese, dates back more than 2000 years. A cousin of Western Chess, its unique style of play results in a wide-open, quick-moving and aggressive contest. Chinese Chess for Beginners explains both the rules and the strategies of the game clearly and in detail so that you can start playing right away. It covers everything from the opening through the endgame. The book includes a set of paper chessmen that you can cut out and begin to play right away.
Jose Raul Capablanca, the third World Chess Champion, said, “In order to improve your game, you must study the endgame before everything else.” Because of the fifty-move rule in chess, it is essential to know how to checkmate your opponent quickly in the endgame.
You also need to know how much material you or your opponent needs to deliver checkmate. This knowledge can help you transition to a drawn endgame even if you are material down.
How Each of the Chess Piece Moves
When learning how the chess pieces move, we will continue working through the pieces from the outside in - rooks, knights, bishops, queen, and king.
Every piece in chess has a unique way of moving. The king and pawn also have special moves only they can perform.
Pawn - except for its first move, the pawn moves one square forward. On its first move, the pawn can move two squares forward.
Be careful when advancing your pawn two squares because it can become a victim of the en passant rule.
The en passant rule states that if a pawn advances two squares past an opponent’s pawn on the fifth rank, the opponent may capture it as if it had moved one square.
