In present tournament practice the Slav Defence is an extremely popular opening system, as it is based upon proven defenses to be found in modern opening theory. The Botvinnik Variation represents an exception as it is characterized by extreme rigour in the tactical fight and by the complexity of its strategy.
In order to keep the "c4" pawn, Black tolerates the demolition of the pawn structure on his King's side. This restricts White's operative radius at the board-centre and Black is able to establish a pawn majority on the Queen's side. After castling on the Queen's side Black is then able to open up the "g" and "h" files in order to attack the White King. At the same time White attempts to batter Black's pawn chain on the Queen's side, where the Black King has found shelter. Thus the battle demonstrates an open character with equal chances on both sides.
