The design of the Championship Chess set is an exact reproduction of the traditional European Pattern Chessmen that have been used at every major International Chess event for the past 10 years. THE CHESSBOARD

The Wooden Tournament Mahogany / Maple Chessboard with 2.25" Squares features Mahogany (dark) and Maple (light) squares with a Mahogany frame. This veneered Chessboard is 0.5" thick and has a satin finish.

    Perfect upgrade to a high quality chess set

    I bought this set seeking something that resembled modern championship board and chessmen design - this is exactly that. Simplistic pieces that, while not perfect, are high quality and hand carved. The weight and feel of moving them around the board is so satisfying that I’m hardly upset when I blunder. The board itself is lovely with clear grain patterns, almost no inaccuracies in craftsmanship, and good attention to detail.

    I found that the satin finish is a little too matte for my liking compared to a glossier finish, but it still shines in the sun and pieces slide easily, it’s growing on me.

    The weight of the chessmen varies slightly as a set, but by no more than a gram or two. All pieces except for the knights are symmetrical from what I can tell. The knights do have noticeable variations in their carvings like in the curve angle on the neck and some minor variations on the mouth. But none are damaged and I do like that they’re slightly different - it adds to the handmade feel. The entire set looks like something that came out of a high end woodworker’s shop and it’s almost flawless.

    The box is fantastic and looks beautiful, worthy of having out on its own. The standard bag is also very nice, but only has enough storage for a chess clock.

    Overall, this set is a huge bang for your buck. I upgraded from a USCF regulation plastic set and was nervous because that set is wonderfully weighted and very inexpensive. The quality and feel of this set really did…
