The Ebony Deluxe Wood Chessboard is made of alternating light and dark wood, (Ebony and Erable). The whitened Erable is also known as Bird's-Eye Maple. Bird's Eye Maple has a pattern of swirling eye-like disruptions in the grain of the wood that create an unusual pattern (see image 5). The wood is durable, hard, and has a fine, smooth texture. This board offers a classic black and white design with the quality of a stunning wooden board, plus a beautiful black border with striking wood grain patterns that is sure to draw attention. It's a standard tournament size and will look great with natural wooden pieces.

This was my first purchase of a high-end chess board. Because the other reviewer’s comments helped me, I thought I’d share a few notes. The board is visually quite attractive, and the exotic woodgrain side trim is more subdued than I expected. The consistency of the light-colored, erable squares is quite striking. This seems like a significant feat, given every single square contains many pearl-like bird’s eyes in the pattern. I match this board with tournament sized (4.2” king) quadruple-weighted plastic pieces, in black and white, and it looks great. Note – the maple squares are slightly cream colored, whereas my white pieces are closer to pure white. This works well!! I won my first game on this board using a Sicilian defense. Thanks, wholesalechess.com!! Would definitely buy again. 5 stars.
The Bird's Eye Maple is beautiful, it reflect light like little pearls are embedded just under the surface. The grain of the Ebony is just visible, otherwise it almost appears purest of blacks. I am not enamored with the trim but the board itself is my new favorite.
