The new Silicone Chess Pieces are a fun alternative to the basic and quality club pieces. They're great for clubs, kids, and more. These chess sets meet all chess tournament standards and regulations. They are a standard Staunton design and have a 3½" tall king with a 1½" base.
I purchased these for some young children, and they enjoy using them. They like the "squishy pieces." Also, they do not break when flung by their younger siblings.
I bought these for a set I'm putting together for my nephew, and they look like they'll be a good fit for him (Good size and weight for smaller hands). Overall, I'm very happy with them.
I'm not someone who needs high end pieces. I like my pieces to have a little gravitas, but I don't need super heavy and pretty pieces. These pieces fit the bill exactly. They are a little heftier than the quality club plastic pieces, but they feel like they would last a lifetime longer than the plastic pieces. I bought these with a silicon board and it quickly became my favorite set. I loved it so much, I bought another combo set with a bag.
If you are looking for a complete combo set, I think you are better served with eh silicone board/piece combo rather than another with plastic pieces.
Broken pieces no more. King without a crown ,chipped Rooks - a thing of the past. However the downside is these pieces are dust magnets.
Have a moist rag handy and should be OK.
Ok, so I have purchased just about one of every kind of chess set around. It's kind of an obsession. When WSC announced these Silicone pieces, I couldn't resist yet again.
The pieces are exactly as advertised in the WSC video. They are made of that silicone material, like those bracelets everyone wears. They're floppy and wobbly, but sitting on the board, just looking at them, you might not even suspect they were anything but plastic. They look exactly like plastic pieces. Playing with them is a pleasure, they have a little heft to them, definitely a little more than the "Basic" plastic pieces. It's nice to not worry about dropping them and having them chip and slowly breakdown over time. They do pick up dirt and particles, but that is easily wiped off or rinsed off.
I purchased the pieces along with the silicone board. Together, they sole a lot of problems, but sliding the silicone pieces on the silicone board doesn't work well. The pieces slide a little better on vinyl.
So what do you get for the price? Pieces that won't chip/break when they fall. Ever. Like never ever. And for my scholastic program, that's GREAT news. Wish WSC would've offered these when we purchased our club's sets. Not a problem, as the plastic pieces need replacing over the next several years, I'll have a great alternative.
Why 4 stars? $20 seems a bit high compared to the plastic pieces. I've always purchased the "Quality Club" sets, and they last really well. Paying more than double for silicone... Well, it's worth it, but... well, I just don't know yet. Replacing plastic pieces once every 5-10 years isn't bad. Replacing them never... is that worth a 125% mark-up?
My only worry about the silicone pieces is tearing... I can foresee kids being like, "Oh this is cool..." Then pulling on them, stretching them out and tearing the piece in half. No amount of epoxy or superglue will work on silicone (but it does fix plastic). That MIGHT be a problem, but it might not. Only time will tell.
No matter what, they're great. I'll enjoy the set I have for personal use, knowing that they will last forever. Certainly when I'm playing outdoors on concrete tabletops! Great new product, and I'd recommend a set to anyone who's interested!
