Not bad, needs improved quality control

Posted by Joe on 23rd Dec 2019

I buy large numbers of these sets (and the multi-colored equivalents) for my students all the time. By and large, they get the job done. Unfortunately, they also have a tendency to crack/shatter with very little warning or handling (especially the black rooks.) Also, the glue holding the weights in is subpar, and the weights tend to break free of the felt holding them in place after a time. If they resolved these issues, this would be the best thing on the market. As it is, I'm constantly on the lookout for something to replace them with, but all competitors seem to have the exact same issue (I assume it's all coming from one factory somewhere.) The reason they get three stars, rather than a lower rating, is because the ones that somehow avoided these quality issues last FOREVER under heavy use.

An absolutely great set. Well made and detail is good. Some commented on the sharp top of the Queen, but I found the set I received to be smoothed off and no problem

    Professional quality

I have ordered about a dozen of these sets, as we make chess boards and boxes/tubes for gifts. These are heavy/sturdy and high quality. The price is fab, too. I wish the white ones were a little more tan (to match with the board) but overall, we are very satisfied and will continue to order these from WholesaleChess.com.

    Great Value

Can't beat the price, nice heavily weighted pieces for 10 bucks. The review that says the Queen's spikes are too sharp must be about the much more expensive super-weight set,I have one and they are very sharp, but there's nothing wrong with the Queens on the $9.99 set .

Once you play with this set, there's no going back to the standard tournament set. Just make sure to gently sand the queen's sharp spikes so you don't cut yourself.
