Our Premier Set of plastic chess pieces with a 4?à¢" tall inch king, is perfect for those discriminating chess players who want an upscale set, without an exorbitant price. You won't find a set of such value for double the cost of this one.
The Premier pieces have a beautiful finish. The white pieces area striking Ivory/Natural color, a shade darker than light ivory but not as dark as the caramel-color of some natural pieces. The set weighs in at a hefty 3.75 pounds. The king weighs a full 65 grams (2.2 ounces.)
As you would expect with a set of such quality, there is an extra queen of both colors. The king base is 1?à? inches so a board with 2¼ inch or larger squares is preferable.
Additional Chess Piece Size information:
This is a nice set except for the king and queen. The queen has very sharp points on her crown and can seriously hurt you if you grab the piece wrong like in a blitz or speed environment. The king is not weighted properly and feels lighter then you would expect for its size compared to the smaller minor pieces and rooks. I own this set, along with two of the tradition Staunton sets and heavy tournament sets. The traditional Staunton set sold here is the best value and quality although will sometimes come with minor defects in the plastic on various pieces just like most decent plastic sets. The extra cost of the premier set along with the sharp edges on the queen and poorly designed king are a game breaker for me. I won't recommend this set to any club type player who mixes tournament play and friendly speed/blitz chess with the same set.
This is a very nice set! It has a great weight and feel, the pieces have a nice finish and it is nicely designed, especially the knight. It is the best plastic set I've ever had and is worth the money. The queen's "pointy crown" is a slight issue because the points tend to break off, but because you can always request replacement pieces, ( which I have done ), the set is great.
Wonderful piece set especially the price.
I received most of the pieces in good condition. However, my white King had some greenish "smudges" or something on it. I carefully washed them off, and now it looks nice.
I would have liked a slightly larger head on the queens. But, overall, I like the appearance, size and weight of the pieces. I think these are the nicest plastic pieces I own.
The pieces are large, heavily-weighted, and finely molded. They are also extremely durable (not to be confused with indestructible). For the money, I truly believe that you will be unable to find a more superb chess set.
For the price the product is more than satisfiable. When I purchase sets I go to a number a places playing for fun. People always complimenting the beauty of the pieces. The players of the game feel the weight and feel of the pieces are very nice.
I bought the set with black and natural pieces. Shipping was fast and the items were well packaged. I expected a decent set, but these pieces are very heavy, very big and look wonderful. Note; you need a large board for this set. I would say 2.25" squares at least. Other reviews have noted the sharp Queens crown but it's only a problem if you have small children, and can be easily fixed. One pawn tilts slightly, as has been reported by others, but I don't think this small problem warrants a lower rating. If several were affected, then it would be a problem. In short, I would buy these again and do recommend them!
Like other reviewers have said, its a good set with the only problem with the sharpness of the queen's crown. But that's easily fixed if you have something to polish it with.
I met a kid at a recent tournament that did exactly that.
I would recommend this set if you want a above average plastic chess piece set.
Great set! Pieces are solid and great for tournament play or display. Very nice plastic set for the price!
