Don't settle for plain plastic pieces if you're short on space or you want to take your game on the road! The Marshall Series Plastic Chess Pieces with 2.875" King have an elegant style and heavy weighted feel while boasting a compact design for small boards or tables.
These pieces are available in black or red for the dark pieces and ivory/white or natural for the light pieces. The red of these pieces is a dark burgundy color.
My set is missing two pawns and I was also delivered a random assortment of extra major and minor pieces. I actually love these pieces and will happily change or remove my review if they ever send me the missing ones, but at this point I don't know how else to get the company's attention. I've sent two emails and a website message over the last week and no response... and then I get an email asking for a review.
While I get that Queen's Gambit and the pandemic are making things harder for a relatively small industry, it really leaves a bad taste in my mouth that they have a bot set up to ask for good product reviews after a week, and none in place to even indicate any of my attempts to contact the company have been received (not even a simple auto reply). I'm not usually a Karen (and I wasn't for my first few messages!), but it's getting a bit ridiculous at this point.
Solid-feeling , weighted plastic pieces. I purchased the red and "natural" sets and like the colors (a deep burgundy and dark cream, respectitvely). The bases are perhaps a little too wide relative to the height - the height looks good on my board with 1 9/16" squares, but the bases look a bit wide.
The knights have slightly tilted (and inconsistently, from piece to piece) necks - either the molds are imperfect, or the pieces were removed from the molds before they were "set."
The "felt" unfortunately was a joke - some extremely thin gabardine-like fabric that covered only the metal weighting, so the perimeter of the plastic pieces still "scrapes" the board. I peeled these off and spent a Sunday afternoon re-felting the set with a self-adhesive thicker felt from an arts and crafts store.
Overall, a decent set of weighted, plastic pieces, not exceptional. Probably worth the price, but recognize that you'll want to re-felt thes.
