The Traditional Staunton Chess Pieces are a high-end Staunton style set available at a very affordable price through WSC. They are uniquely stylish in that they come in several color combinations guaranteed to make heads turn at any club or tournament. The set is a hefty 2 lbs 14 ounces.
The noble king stands at 3 ¾ inches tall and carries a traditional cross on his head. There are extra queens, as you would expect with a sets of this quality. These sets have a British style knight. He has his head held high, ears laid back—and teeth bared, and will show no quarter to any opponent. The Traditional Staunton Set plays best on a board with at least 2 inch squares.
Best of all, each set comes with a WSC Cloth Drawstring Chess Bag to store or carry the pieces to and from tournaments. Bag color may vary according to inventory.
The red pieces in this set are a dark crimson red and may look darker than the photos above. Due to the color and flat finish on the blue and red sets, those pieces have an "antiqued" or played look and will show more scratches than the other colors. If you prefer a glossy piece please purchase the ivory, natural or black pieces.
The good: Heavy, simple, shape, size, price. The less: glossy, red irregular, paper felt in the base.

I have now acquired 8 of the "superior" plastic chess sets on offer from WSC, and I can say without fear of contradiction that the "Traditional Staunton" set is the only truly disappointing one among them: I did read the previous reviews about the multitude of scratches on these pieces, the rattling weights in many - they're all true. Of the 16 pawns with this set, 9 arrived with rattling weights. And practically every single piece had scratches, some of them all over. The felt paper is very thin indeed, and several of them were already pierced through, one rook had the felt paper scratched half off. This is a *new* set, but you wouldn't believe it. Even at the sales price, *every* other set here is better value, most of them (Hastings, Marshall, Premier, Zurich, Reykjavik) *far* better value. But the pouch is nice.
Great set and I love the colors offered - a great set for the price and very fast shipping.
I have two of these sets. My only complaint is that the weight rattles around a bit in a few of the pieces in each set. Statistically, that indicates many or most of the sets will have this flaw. Nothing a bit of glue can't fix though.
Ordered these pieces for a board I made, and initially I was not satisfied with the color of the red pieces (take the disclaimer as true). The pieces were certainly quality, but the color issue bothered Me. Despite the disclaimer, I had selected the red pieces hoping they would be good for the board. They were not, but here is where the service kicked in. The company responded very positively to My error and changed the pieces out (black for red) at no cost to Me. I am most satisfied with the outcome and the quality. For plastic pieces, these are great!
This is a decent set of Chess pieces. If you are wanting the best plastic set available on this site do not get this ( in my opinion ) Get the Premier Set.. much better , however , This is better than most of the other sets available. I have both. These pieces are smaller and not as heavy as the Premier set but also are much better than the Archer set. This might depend on taste. Both sets are great honestly. When these arrived the black Pieces looked a bit dull. I wiped them all off and then went over them with a light coat of mineral oil / baby oil.They look great now.
It wasn't just the set that impressed me, it was the service that I got from Wholesale Chess. When I got the set, one of the kings was broken. Wholesale Chess was great about replacing it. They got me a new piece in just a couple days.
