The Chamfered series of chess pieces feature a beautiful, unique finish with a high level of detail not often available in its price range. The Chamfered series showcase a standard Staunton-style pawn with a raised round head and a wide neck crown. The unique rook has an unusually tall neck with a short parapet at the top. The knight piece is the real jewel in this set with a highly-detailed mane and a strong, detailed snout. The bishop piece is slightly skinnier than most sets with a wide, vertical notch and narrow neck. The queen is a standard Staunton queen with a muted crown to avoid sharp edges. Finally, the king features a rounded top with a traditional British cross on top.
These pieces are weighted. The smaller pieces contain lighter weights, while larger pieces have heavier weights. This set is a great buy in the price range and is available in three types of finishes and three sizes.
A few need glued, but nice.
A nice set. But noticed the bottoms coming off, a few.
I own one of these sets, with the lighter black pieces, for analysis. I bought this second set for a 5th grader to use on a chess table (1.5" squares) at home. The set is well-made, weighted properly, and there is a bonus for use by children. The bottoms are covered with leather, not some type of cloth. In the event of the inevitable water, soda, etc. spill on the board the pieces will not absorb the liquid. Also, the coefficient of sliding friction (sorry about being geeky!) between the pads and the wooden table is higher than cloth pads, meaning that if the table is jostled the pieces will not go sliding off the table as easily. And as an additional bonus, when bored you can, with a little effort, balance the pieces on the chamfered base, or play the entire game with the pieces balanced, giving it a weird look.
I bought these from Wholesale Chess because I think they have the best on-line selection and value. This boxwood and rosewood set is to match a "Straight Up" chess board, so I was limited to a 2.5" king. Of all the sets I looked at these had the finest carving I could find in this size, especially on the knight and in my moderate price range. You can feel the weight a little, but they are small so you have to forgive the low mass. If I had to quibble the cardboard box they came in was pretty beat up, but the pieces were individually bubble wrapped and in perfect condition.
