The Staunton-style French Set is named for the French Knight that accompanies it. His head is proudly held straight out from his body (no shirking a challenge here!) and his mane is well groomed behind his laid back ears. The King and his Queen are classic Staunton.
This set is made from sheesham, rosewood (+$10), or ebonized hardwood for the dark pieces and boxwood for the light pieces. Every piece has a felt bottom to keep your board protected. Each set includes 32 pieces - no extra queens available for these sets. These pieces are weighted. The smaller pieces contain lighter weights, while larger pieces have heavier weights.
i got the rosewood pieces. look nothing like picture: they are brown and a bunch of the pieces have almost white blotches. not good quality. horses look like zebras. Regret purchase.
The Set look exquisite on my 19" wood board with 2" squares. The 3 3/4"King with a 1 3/8" base gives the square it sit on a commanding majestic appearance. Each piece is nicely weight with a satin finish. A good choice for my game.
I paid extra for the "rosewood" finish and was disappointed. The wood is dark brown with no suggestion of the rosewood color I expected.
For the price of 44.99, I did not expect much from this set, i planned on using it in tournament, but it turns out that the King's base does not meet USCF requirements. The base measures 1 3/8" which is about 1/8" too small for the height of 3.75". Secondly, the pieces arrived in a very badly crumbled box and all the pieces in one bag without any padding for protection. After inspecting the pieces which were coated in a brown dusty like material, I noticed a lot of dents and a few chips. The Ebonizing on the black pieces was rubbing off especially on the Knights. The felt pads underneath the pieces were peeling off on about 10 pieces. After some time cleaning the pieces and waxing them and gluing the felt pads the pieces were acceptable, but nothing to be excited about. These pieces are barely better than toy store sets. Lastly, the pieces are not very heavily weighted. If you want a cheap set that you do not have to worry about, I guess this set is for you. This set is made my Chopra Inc of India, they seem to have quality control issues, you either get a very well done set or one that is simply below par, you never know what your going to get from Chopra. I cannot recommend these pieces to anyone.
I have the rosewood version. I picked up this set because of the fairly narrow king base- I have a 1.75 inch square board I wanted to use these with. They work perfect for that, and 2 inch square boards are appropriate, too.
My set came perfect out of the box. The carvings were all correct, the felt was thicker than I expected (and cut correctly). There are no weak spots that will break if a piece hits the floor. Like the other reviewer, I like shorter pawns, and in this set the pawns aren't too high- the relationship from the pawn to the rook is on the money. The graduation in height from the King on down is well done with these pieces.
I'd love to have extra queens available- but for the price I'm really thrilled with the pieces so I can overlook that. This is a great choice for a daily set you can knock around a bit, and for the price it's a really good deal. Well done!
This set is just amazing. If you're like me and you like short, stout pawns, get this set. I was drawn to this set because of its pawn style. I don't really like the skinny, elegant look some other pawns have so, I looked everywhere until I found this set. A very beautiful set indeed. And the other pieces are just as beautiful. I was a bit worried I wouldn't like the knight, but when I saw it I immediately liked it's style as well. Overall a great buy, you can't go wrong. And don't even get me started on the rooks and bishops...
