This set has been crafted to imitate the prevailing design and dimension of the original Staunton pattern chess men, registered by Nathaniel Cook in March of 1849 and first manufactured by Jaques of London in September 1849. The distinctive feature of this set is in the Knight design, which is modeled after the noble steeds from the Greek Parthenon. Its craftsmanship is stunning.
The Nobility Series from our Premier Collection is Crafted from boxwood for the light pieces, and your choice of Bud Rosewood, Rosewood, or Ebony for the dark pieces. The King stands 4" tall with a 1 3/4" base. From the noble Knight to the towering Rook, these pieces are sure to catch the eye. These pieces are weighted and fit well on a board with 2.25 - 2.5" squares.
I bought the Rosewood set and I am absolutely amazed at the high quality craftsmanship of every piece. They are the best Staunton style chess pieces that I've seen on all the major on-line chess retailers. The shape and proportions are perfect. If only the Ebony sets were available, I would get a set of those too!
The bud rosewood is beautiful and the design of the pieces is artful. I have been looking for a set that contrasts nicely on an ebony and maple board and this is it! Best size board is 2.375” squares. A little tight on 2.25”. A couple of the pieces had minor flaws and Wholesale Chess replaced the pieces no questions asked.
