In the 1950s and 1960s the Zagreb Chess Set was one of the most popular chess sets used at major international chess tournaments, most notably the World Championship Candidates Match that was held in Bied, Zagreb in 1959. Thus, you may often see this set called the Zagreb '59. (Zagreb is now the capital of Croatia.)
This beautiful reproduction set comes with two queens of each color. The queens and bishops have a contrasting color ball on top and the king has a contrasting crown. The knight is a most interesting piece. Patterned after a Russian knight, he has his head down, a closed mouth, a dramatically carved head, and thin curved neck above his thick chest.
As with all wood pieces, sets many have variations in colors of grain within a set. These pieces are weighted. The smaller pieces contain lighter weights, while larger pieces have heavier weights. Featured in this set:
I was hesitant to order a small set of chess pieces that listed for right at $40. The write-up and pictures were favorable so I took a chance on the Boxwood and Rosewood combination. The order arrived the very next day; my wife and I were much more than pleasantly surprised by the timing and the product. I am most particular with what I want to display. That being understood, my classic/historic Zagreb chess pieces (2.5” King) could not be more perfect and beautifully made. Just what I wanted for my 1 1/2” wooden board squares — the set is a wonderful asset and joy to own!
I purchased the Rosewood pieces. Very attractive small set. Arrived with two cracked Rosewood pieces which were replaced without any hassle. Replacements were a good color match. I purchased these pieces for a chessboard with 1.75 - inch squares. The king base was the perfect size for this board and the king and queen fit the board very well, but the rest of the pieces looked a little small. If I had gone up to the 3-inch tall king, however, the king and queen would have looked a little crowded with the rest of the pieces looking about right. Neither set is a perfect match for a board with 1.75 - inch squares. If you are really picky about pieces matching the square size, I suggest you skip this set for 1.75 - inch squares and purchase the French Chess Pieces with a 3 - inch King. That set is a perfect match for 1.75 - inch squares. It’s good for 1.875 - inch squares also.
The square size of my board is 1.4" and the pieces look marvelous.
I bought these to use on the 12" analysis board. It is a perfect match. The rosewood has a nice color and grain. There are a few minor inconsistencies, like the cuts on the rook crenelations are not completely symetrical, and the knights are not 100% identical, but these are so small that you have to be looking really closely to see. Overall it has the look of a quality full size set, and I think it is a good buy.
Just as the poster Jerry Clarke said, "all doubts were removed..." I didn't have any to begin with but if you do, then I am pretty sure they will be gone once you see them. There was one sheesham pawn that was a bit darker than most and the bishops on the white pieces were a bit different color than their other counter-parts but it wasn't anything that ruined the style. The weight is just right and feels pleasant for chess play. The zagreb chess set is so unique and to find them at this price is just splendid! They're not small nor are they so big that you have to find a reserved space for them. The service was also really good. They arrived sooner than expected and everything went just smoothly. Usually I have doubts with some services until I see them but this one is good. These pieces are really recommended! No doubt that you also will like them! ;)
Really love my ebonized 2.5" Zagreb Set from WSC. Very high quality look and feel. Excellent weight. Fit on a 12" analysis board perfectly. Any review that is lower than 5-stars because they couldn't accurately measure their board size and had to pay return shipping costs because of their own mistakes should be deleted. This is a 5-Star chess product. The only slight issue I have is that the bishops are a bit too large and stocky. Best $30 I have spent on chess equipment ever.
After searching numerous chess sets online, finally decided on the 2.5 Zagreb set from Wholesale chess. Must confess to some trepidation afterwards fearing what kind of chess pieces could they be for $29.99! Happily all doubts were removed when the set arrived! The pieces are quite beautiful and finely detailed (impressive in a small set) and overall a delight to the eye and a joy to play with! The set arrived in timely manner and well packaged. Next day noticed small cracking on one rook and a pawn with a small flaw. Called customer service and spoke to Robin and later Sarah, resolved the issue immediately sending replacement pieces no charge. Customer service is too often missing the "service" but not here...am impressed with the service, quality, and value received and is rare indeed to get all three in this day and age! Would highly recommend Wholesale chess to anyone who wants quality, value and exceptional service!
2.5" ebonized is a really nice analysis/travel set. I use the set with a 12" vinyl board and it works great. I wish the pieces, especially the pawns, were heavier as they sit high on the felt and have a slight tendency to tip. The bishops are also a little big. Overall very happy.
Lovely pieces, just what I wanted, arrived timely.
