Enjoy it on the back lawn or in the family room! The suggested age is 8 and older, but we know of many who have purchased this for very young children as their first chess set because of its durability. It makes a great gift. defective chess board

The chess board is defective , there are black marks on the board and creases were the board folds. I am planning on returning it. The pieces are nice.

    Good girl/Bad boy

Love the large chess pieces. Hated the industrial smell. Had to air it out in our garage for a few hours. That's why I gave it four stars instead of five.

Much better than I thought it would be

Posted by W Whitelaw on 10th Nov 2013

The pieces came wrapped in sealed plastic bags, one or two pieces per bag, with a folding floppy board all crammed into a carrying box with photos of Chinese kids on the outside.

The pieces are much better than I thought they would be. Some oversized sets are pretty ugly; the manufacturer seems to think that as long as they're big, it doesn't matter what they look like. But this one is actually an attractive rendition of a classic Staunton. The pieces are in a hard plastic, smooth and glossy, with good surface finish. Mold lines are present but not at all prominent in most places. The pieces are not weighted in any way but have perfectly good (albeit thin) green paperish felt on the bottoms. The pieces are well sculpted although there is slight variation in the styling of the bases, so that there is that effect similar to most Stauntons which makes the pieces all look like they're not quite from the same set. But that's very minor; I own a LOT of Stauntons, from 19th century ivory tournament sets to modern dollar-store cheapies, and I sometimes notice pretty obscure things to quibble about.

    King - 8" on the nose. 3 5/8" dia base. A good-looking piece, well-sculpted and graceful.

Queen - about the same height as the King, not including his cross. The ball on top of the Queen's head is modified into a rounded cylinder so that she could be made in a 3-piece mold; everything below the edge of the coronet was made in a conventional 2-piece mold, and the top of the coronet, head, and the "ball" formed with a third mold piece.

Rook - the rook is a weak point in many molded sets, but not here. The crenelation has six embrasures, all exceptionally well formed. Obviously another three-piece mold was involved. I think I'd have made the rook a few millimeters taller so that he'd match the knights and bishops better, but he's such a beautifully molded piece I hate to quibble.

Knight - looks good, though not spectacular. The ears are a bit rudimentary, the eyes are beady little things, and the nose seems a bit long for a horse.

Bishop - miter is slightly unusual, very blunt on top, and ball on tip is squashed down into an oblate spheroid. Cut in miter is much shorter than usual, but at least formed as a slot all the way through. Overall a strangely squat figure, but still looks decent.

Pawn - a nice Stauntonesque pawn.

The board is not up to the standard of the rest of the set. The screening is indifferent, there are large smudges in the ink as if some underpaid Chinese factory laborer handled it before it was dry, and there are various small lumps and holes in the material. I can't tell if it emits a foul odor as I have almost no olfactory sense - lucky me.

So the board's about a 2 star item, but I like the pieces enough to give the whole package 5 stars anyway.

    Excellent! 5 Stars!

Posted by Zach from VA on 4th Sep 2013

What had attracted me to this particular set was the piece size; I had made a 3'x3' chessboard a few years back as a DIY project from a sheet of plywood and glued 4" black and white tiles to it, but I had a difficult time finding a set of pieces proportionate to the board and tiles...until now! The vinyl board came in good condition,I may be using that board on the road (and did need some fresh air, which is true to what I've read in previous reviews). Aside from minor cosmetic flaws, the pieces arrived in excellent condition and fit perfectly! 5 stars!

    Fantastic for older folks!

My patients love these chess pieces. It is so cool to watch them play. For people who have shakey hands this set is a must. Pieces do not fall over easy. I think it is a great buy for the money!

The item is good value and I anticipate getting a lot of fun with it. One of the castles was broken in the bag but we can still use it.
